Liverpool Marathon 14/10/2012

What a day we all had on Sunday! Andy and I travelled early in to Liverpool and stopped at a little café in the city centre for breakfast where we got chatting to the guy serving us who was called Seamus. We told him about Matt running the marathon and he asked if Matt was supporting a charity. When we explained it was for Epilepsy in Action he was delighted as it turns out he had been diagnosed w ith the condition last year and had to take time out from Uni while they got his meds sorted out. I told him how Matt was supporting the charity for his friend Will who also had epilepsy whose life was taken in a tragic accident on the Thames last year. He immediately gave me a fiver and asked me to donate it to the charity for him. So I gave him a WILLPOWER band – he promised to wear it always. There is a photo of Seamus wearing his band in the photos I just uploaded. It was a superb sunny day in Liverpool, Andy and I got the ferry to Birkenhead for the first half of the race and then back to the Liver Building for the last half and final stretch where we met Lewis who had done a great job making sure Matt got some sleep in his flat giving up his bed and getting him up and to the start of the race in good time. We managed to spot Matt at 2 miles, 10 miles (just missed him by moments at 17 miles) and then at 26 miles. He was crying with the pain for the last 3 miles; he had stopped to help someone up who had fallen down which made his muscles freeze up solid. He fell as a result and for a while was unable to get up until a wonderful lady in the crowd who happened to be a nurse came over and loosened his leg muscles so he could finish the last mile. He was tired and emotional when he crossed the line, I was too, but mostly delighted he had finished safely. It took him 4 hours and 6 minutes. All the crowds were amazing and we met some great people. Hats off to all of the runners with the determination to see the race to the end. It was a fantastic and moving day of incredible human endeavour, everyone running for things important to them and their supporters cheering them on. Thank you so much for your support xx Jackie Griffiths
